WHAT IS DYSLEXIA?
What is Dyslexia?
Dyslexia is a general term for disorders that involve difficulty in learning to read or interpret words, letters, and other symbols, but that do not affect general intelligence. Dyslexia is the most common learning disability in children and persists throughout life. It is never too late for people with dyslexia to learn to improve their language skills but the sooner dyslexia is treated, the more favourable the outcome.
Dyslexia can go undetected in the early grades of schooling. The child can become frustrated by the difficulty in learning to read, and other problems can arise that disguise dyslexia. The child may show signs of depression and low self-esteem and the child’s success in school may be jeopardized if the problem remains untreated.
The Canadian Dyslexia Association estimates that dyslexia affects 23% of the general population to varying degrees and dyslexia represents 80 to 90% of all learning disabilities. For more information, go to the Canadian Dyslexia Association website – Canadian Dyslexia Association
About the Learning Centre
The Scottish Rite Charitable Foundation (SRCF) was established in 1964 and supports initiatives that solve “puzzles of the mind” such as Alzheimer’s and Dyslexia. One of the SRCF’s initiatives has been to establish Learning Centres for children with dyslexia across Canada, and the SRCF Learning Centre Canada to proud to be a part of this network. You can find out more about our parent organization on there website: Scottish Rite Charitable Foundation of Canada. To discover more about Freemasonry, please visit Ancient & Accepted Scottish Rite of Canada for Canada wide information or Grand Lodge of Alberta for information in Alberta.
The SRCF Learning Centre Calgary is located at 103, 2915 – 21st Street NE and officially opened in September 2012. The SRCFLCC will receive referrals from Calgary and area Boards of Education and Disabilities Alberta. Referrals are not necessary all applications will be assessed by the Centre Director to ensure the child is a fit for our program. The children are then assigned a “tutor” and their sessions begin. Typically, children receive 2 hours of “tutoring” a week between 4pm and 8pm Monday to Thursday. A “tutoring year” lasts for 26 weeks. Lessons are divided into 5 levels and most children take up to 3 years to complete the program.
The SRCFLCC is currently training “tutors” and looking for “children”.

If you are interested in becoming a tutor, please CONTACT US. Tutors work one-on-one with a child two hours per week for a 26 week “year” at a time that best fits your schedule and the schedule of the child between the hours of 4 pm and 8 pm, Monday through Thursday.
All tutors will need to be trained in the Orton-Gillingham approach to teaching children with dyslexia. Training to become a tutor is free and consists of 45 hours of classroom tutorial and observation with feedback conducted over the following 12 months.
Becoming a tutor allows you to become that special person who leads a child through the process of learning to read, taking them from the world of frustration to one of success. Being that someone will require a significant commitment of your time, but it will be rewarded bountifully by the smiles of a happy child and a thankful family.
